Since you seem to be the graphics genius of the wiki, I need a favor. Can you take the image on the home page and add the word "Wiki" like in the upper-left corner image? And, while you're at it, but this is of much less priority, the upper-left image seems to be cut off at the bottom. Specifically, the W. The dimensions need to be the same, 250x65, but if you get the chance and feel like fixing that, that would be great. If not, I would ask that you at least do the first favor. Much appreciated, and hope all is well.
I'm planning on using the image for the new main page which will be modeled after the WB wiki main page. Not exactly like it, but I want to use the Brightwood Adventures Title Screen image with the word "Wiki" on it like the WB main page has. If this is something you cannot do, or cannot do in the next week or so, please let me know and I'll try to do it myself. I've already tried once and just am not able to do it properly, for some reason. I might be able to do it if I spend a lot more time with it. Please let me know as soon as you can. Thanks! Edit: And, if I need to I'll post it in the Editing the Wiki Board to see if anyone will volunteer to take care of it. Wanted to ask you first as you're the original author so you should have all the original files.
P.S. If you can make the letters for Wiki twice the size as the letters for Brightwood Adventures, that'd be great. Make the Wiki part really stand out so people know it's the wiki, not part of the game. Pretty much span from Wally to Rowan. Thanks so much!
Actually, see the shadow the BA makes on the grass underneath it, between Wally and Rowan? Having the letters for WIKI fit in that shadow would be perfect. The W would slant that way anyway and just make the letters kinda bend as they go so the last I is slanted almost enough to line up with the other end of the shadow. If that makes sense at all.
Hope you're doing well. Long time no see/talk, so I guess that means you've been working and and not hardly working. That's always a good thing!
If you're interested, I found some code that can break things up into any number of columns you like. It's a way to make the Tree article shorter. There's two kinds, 1 that numbers the items and one that doesn't. If it's something you're interested in just let me know and I'll post it somewhere for you to check out both ways. Or, if I'm done with the LE Series Walkthrough article revamping, you'll get to see the non-numbered columns and how easy the code is. They're both extremely easy.
Check in some time with me to let me know you're alive! LoL
Different topic, but I found some code that allows me to change the color of people's usernames for different reasons, ie inactive users will show up a certain color, admins a certain color, and active editors a certain color. It's really neat. After I'm done with the LE Walkthrough remodel, I'll be working on that. Now this code is long and all has to be done by hand, but the final product is well worth it. It works everywhere but the Forum. So, even in the Recent Wiki Activity boxes in the right column will show the different colors. It's just a nice quick way to show who's active, and who's who. Of course, I'll need to post a key or legend so people will know what's what. I think it will be worth it in the long run. It will keep people from trying to contact people that are no long playing or even active on the wiki anymore.
If I remember correctly, you told me you had the same issue I did about the Giant Chisel taking the place of Chisel in your Special Items list. This caused us not to know how many Chisels we have, or are being used in completing structures. I just wanted to let you know that I finally got Kiwi to fix this for me. It took them doing several things, but the one that worked is reducing the inventory of both Chisels and Giant Chisels to zero. Chances are we're both far enough in the game where we don't need Giant Chisels anymore, so by them getting rid of both of them completely, it fixes the issue. I now know how many Chisels I have and don't care about the Giant Chisels. If, in the future, the Giant Chisels come back, for some reason, I will know what to have Kiwi do to fix the issue again. I'm really hoping I'm done with the Giant Chisels. Hope this helps you get yours fixed. You'll probably have to use the term "reduce the inventory to zero" or they won't understand what you're talking about.
Sorry it has taken me so long to get back with you. This is basically to let you know about this Thread and to get you to respond whenever you can on it. I haven't had a chance to go over any of your latest work, but will do so later today. I'm about to start working on this latest LE Series and will sleep after that. I'll post a proper response to your Editing the Wiki Template Thread later today, or possibly tomorrow at the latest. Hope this finds you well and in good spirits!
Since you're here this weekend, will you watch out for anyone who posts in the Forum? I really need to spend some time in myself this weekend. I'm having a really hard time and today I just can't seem to stop thinking about how different my life would be if I wasn't sick. You know, like who I would be with, etc etc. I would greatly appreciate it. I'm sure if you don't reply with in a few hours that Si will. Thanks so much! If you need anything, just let me know. I may not reply right away, but of course I'll get back with you. Hope you have a good weekend.
Well crap. Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner, today was kinda crazy. Unfortunately, I'm actually not likely to be around very much this weekend, as I'm also feeling a bit sick. I'm taking tommorrow off, and my boss finally got back to me about going home early today (initial request around 9:50 this morning. About 5:45 pm he finally managed to get someone to come in and cover my shift. They should be here about 6:30 pm. So, I'll maybe get an hour and a half off. -_-;).
So, yeah, not likely to be around much, but I will try to check in on things in the Forum while I'm at home. Sorry I can't be more helpful, stupid timing for me to be sick on so many different levels. Anyways, you shouldn't worry about taking some time off for yourself regardless of what else is going on. Everybody needs a little me time, and you most certainly deserve it what with all you do around here. I need to go now, but feel free to leave a post if you want to talk about anything. Have a good weekend, and I hope you feel better soon!
Hey there! Sorry I've been MIA lately. Weekend before last I was out sick of course. Then last weekend my boss suprised me with yet another new hire to train. yay. But I'm supposed to start working with a more experienced employee soon, at least on Sun and Mon, so hopefully this and future weekends will be better. Anyways, probably won't be able to do much bulk stuff today, but will try to get some Forum stuff posted/answered at least.
Hey, just wanted to let you know that if you want to keep an eye on all the wikia activity, here's the place to bookmark: Special:RecentChanges. It tracks all activity, not just the stuff listed in the Wiki Activity link in the Nav Menu. Hope it helps!
You may also want to check out this page: Help:Recent_changes. It just gives you a little more detail on keeping an eye on all the wikia changes.
And, this page: Help:WikiActivity_tag gives you info on putting the Tags into say a User Page, not your Profile Page, but a created article with your name. However, it may work in your Profile or a Blog if you put it there. It says to put it in an article, but you know how they are. They probably never considered putting it anywhere else.
In terms of programming fluency, I'm pretty much equivalent to someone trying to translate things with a guidebook in one hand, a dictionary in the other, and a notepad with more erasure marks than pencil marks on the desk. Basically, given the tools and plenty of time, I can work out how to do a specific project on my own, but attempts to actually converse about it usually result in a blank stare. Of course, I'm always willing to learn.
That said, I'm totally up for trying it out if you are. I'm learning something new either way. :).
If it's not something either of us will be able to just pick up and start using, I'll hold off on requesting it. I think we both have enough on our plates right now. I'll start checking out how other wikias are using it here and there and keep up with it. If I see something that someone is doing that we can use here to make our lives easier, I'll jump in and grab it.
I see you're figuring how to use Templates for the QS Walkthroughs. I've been giving this some thought after my failed experiments with LEQS Walkthroughs. I'll leave it up to you if we discuss it here, or on the Editing the Wiki (need to change that to wikia) Board.
Already left a message for the Lua question you had. I figure we can use that one for technical aspects and this one for more general stuff, like what to include where. Although, after we get some more of the basic progress done, we may want to make a post on the Board so we can get some feedback.
I know we moved this to the Forum, but this is more of a personal question about Templates. Are you keeping a list of all the Templates you're created, for test purposes now of course, in a Blog or somewhere? I'd like to be able to check in on them and offer help when I can. If you even want me to help. LoL. Going through the pages trying to find all of the Templates being used is tedious. A list would be much more convenient, if you don't mind. Just let me know where decide to put them. And, if you decide not to do it, that's fine to. Just let me know either way. Thanks!
Edit: At least Blogs have Comments that we can discuss each everything there. It'd be nice to have all the Comments and Templates all in the same place. Like the Talk Pages, if you only got emails on them. Talk Pages, I believe, should be the place to discuss layout, formatting, etc on the Articles. Not content. I really would like to find a for both of us to use the Talk Pages. Don't start using them yet, I want to do some more research. Plus, I found some code that I would like to implement regarding Talk Pages. After I get it ready to roll out, and figure out a way that you can get notified, we can discuss it further.
I haven't used any Templates on actual pages yet, might wind up doing so soon though. And yeah, I'll go ahead and try to start making a list of my Templates and progress on them in my Blog []. And yeah, not sure how Talk pages work exactly, so I'll leave it to you for the time being. XD.
Now that I've found what I posted on your Wall under another topic about seeing all the changes to everything on the wikia, I'm not so concerned about you creating a list. I know you probably will anyway, but you don't have to if you don't want to. That RC link shows everything. That's perfect for me.
I'm just glad I finally figured out what was keeping me from seeing all Blogs on this, and every other, wikia!
Whenever you get the chance, check out my User page. The one with my Profile, Message Wall, Blog, etc. Compare it to yours and see if you think people will freak out too much if I make those changes wikia-wide. It will only affect people's User Profile pages, which people don't visit that often. I just like the way it hides the Search Bar, and moves everything up. I like the Tabs better, too. The Search Bar being hidden is nice because I'm sure people don't go to search the wikia from their User Profile pages. The squishing of everything at the top brings everything at the bottom up, which gives it all a cleaner look, I think. Oh, and if you don't see the changes, let me know that too. I'm sitting here thinking about it and it may not show up for you, but it should. No rush at all. This is one of those background things I've been working on. My next project is the Main Page (Home).
Sorry, aside from the fact that I can't see a "Following" tab on your User Page, I'm not seeing any differences. And personally, I wouldn't remove the Search bar. Most of the time I start my browsing on my Message Wall, because that's where I'm sent to when I click the links on my little profile box. One additional click to go to the Home page or whatever in order to find the search bar isn't really a big deal for me, but for others loading the additional page may have a bigger impact. Aside from that, how would it affect mobile browsing? Can we even browse the site mobile-y? I have no idea how that should be spelled...
It doesn't look like it affects Mobile Users. There are no Tabs, or anything like that, on the Mobile version.
The Search button is still there, just not the blank space to add text. If you hit the Search button, it will open up the Search page. If I make it universal for everybody, but you don't want the changes to affect you, I'll give you the code and where to put it so you'll see a normal Profile page for everybody, including yourself. Right now, I'm the only one that can see the changes because of the where i have the code. I thought it would affect other people seeing my page, but I was wrong. Still debating on if it should be universal, or not.
Funny you should mention that. w:c:cbguineapig/User:CoolBurnMtW. My latest creation. Just view it, though. Don't make any Edits to anything, anywhere. I don't want people "Joining" unless I ask them to for some specific reason. Later on, I'll ask you to Join it to see if the automated welcome messages I'm working on work. But just view for now. Make sure you compare your BA profile to the test one, so you can get the big picture.
For some reason, I can't help but think of those "Free Beer Tomorrow" signs. XD.
Anyways, comparison time. The differences I'm seeing are the Search thing you talked about, a change in background color around the main profile box thing at top (BA is grey, CBGP is white like the rest of the page), and the tabs are different. I think that about covers it.
My personal preference at this point is the BA version. I like that the Search feature is more obvious, and I really perfer the grey background to the white. Makes things look more streamlined and a lot cleaner. Same with the tabs. Although seeing CBGP's tabs against BA's grey background may make them look better than than they do with CBGP's white background.
The background colors on both wikias are the same. At least they're supposed to be. Let me check. Yeah, they're the same. BA used to be white til just a week ago, or so. I changed it to the light grey that it is now, and even changed the background on the BA_title Image you made. Then again, it the differences could be because of our monitor differences. Who knows.
I just like the gradient colors in the Tabs, and the way it shrinks that big box where it shows how many edits you have and where you live, etc. I can always move it down so the Search bar isn't hidden, or I can come up with some code for you to put in your CSS page that will keep your view the way it is now.
Oh, boogers. I had typed up a response to this earlier, but accidently closed it before submission when I left work.
Anyways, I don't think I'm describing it correctly. The background color is the same for both wikis. What I'm talking about is more like a band of darker grey that runs across the much lighter background. On the BA wiki, this band runs from the top of the Search box field to the top of the tabs' content. The selected tab remains the background color, and stands out against the band, while the unselected ones are the same color as the band and so are visually reduced to the blue links. Basically, the generic Profile box and Image at the top of the page is highlighted because it is mounted on a band of darker grey. To me, the BA Profile is visually cleaner, and overall the result is a more professional looking page.
Edit: Here's a link to my Profile on the Avatar Wiki. You should be able to see an example of what I'm talking about there.
Edit2: on another note, good call on the background change. I didn't really take note of it, but the light grey is easier on the eyes and makes the white fields for input stand out. Would this be Ghost White or Smoke Gray by any chance?
I think you're talking about the gradient, from light to dark grey, color that runs from about the search box down to the tabs? I'm not sure why the CSS gets rid of that, but I think I can find a way to leave it in and still shrink the box and move everything up. I just don't like all that empty space in that big box that tells where you live and fave wikis, etc. That, to me, makes it look less professional.
Anyways, I know what code, and where to put it, to give to you to leave your view alone. Actually, it will override what I do to everybody's. At least I think I know. We'll have to play with it one day, when I'm actually all done fiddling with it all.
Go back to view my profile page at the cbguineapig site, when you get the chance. I think I figured out how to leave that gradient color in the background, reveal the search bar, and shrink the box, and make the tabs gradient, all at the same time. You may need to Ctrl+F5 a couple times to see the final product.
I can't find where I was talking about not being able to see anyone's Blogs, but it's related to CSS and the User Profile pages. I just figured out that if you disable the first part of the code that hides the Search Bar, it fixes the Blog problem. I have no clue why it would cause me not to be able to see Blogs, but it does. I went back to the site where I got the code to see if I have the same Blog problem there, and it doesn't even let me create a blog to test to see. So, there's definitely something up with that. The person that told me about it in the first place doesn't know enough about CSS to be of any help. However, I've got the problem fixed. If/When you go to the cbguineapig site again, you'll see that the Search Bar is not hidden, the gradient color is there in the background that you were talking about, the Tabs are gradient, and Blogs are viewable. Let me know if you have any issues with the way things look down there, or any suggestions. Thanks!
Weird about the Blog thing. Anyways, it would appear that the gradient is what I was talking about. I always think of "gradient" as being a gradual change in color, but I guess I'm wrong. XD. In any case, yeah, it does look better. I still prefer the BA look, but that may just be me being my overly-persnickety self. Have you been getting input from other users? Because that may help with decision making. I understand that you want to change things, really make the wiki look as new and improved as it is, but maybe it's better to leave the user pages as-is for the rest of the wiki. At least for now.
On another note, you may want to take the page's font into consideration. I know that fonts often vary in size, but I have no idea if they actually impact the spacing of things on the wiki formats and such. So, yeah. Just a thought.
You're right about gradient being gradual. That's the vertical "gradual getting darker" part you were talking about behind the user profile info box, right?
I can't believe you still don't like it! I fixed everything you said you had a problem with. LoL I think it gives the profile pages a cleaner look. That box being smaller is the only real difference, besides the gradient Tabs.
I haven't brought it up to the rest of the wikia, yet. I wouldn't change anything without bringing it up with everybody first. However, I doubt many people will actually chime in.
The fonts are just something I was playing with. I doubt I'll change the main font used throughout the wikia. Just for reference, that's called "body" font. I have found a good font to use for the headers the way WB wikia uses them on the main page. Even found a slick way to display the headers. Not header as in header 2, 3, etc. Just what the template is called on the site that I found to copy, modify, and use for here.
Btw, I didn't get an email that you had left a message. I just happened to notice there was a notification. So, if I don't reply for a while, that's why. I seem to be having problems with Wikia emails the past couple days. I haven't been getting emails for things I normally would. Seems like there's always something going on with me, lately! Heheh
